Mid-America Christian (Okla.) University junior outfielder Somer Grimes is an all-around student-athlete. She played in 42 games for the Lady Evangels last season. She is a team leader, always willing to lend a hand.

“Somer is the mother on the team; she takes care of everyone,” Head Softball Coach Jerald Lewis said. “She is a nurturer, always putting others first. She treats people like they are family.”

Last year, Grimes was diagnosed with Iron Deficiency Anemia. In November 2008, she received three units of blood, helping restore iron to her body. Grimes needed a second transfusion in November 2009.

The Lady Evangel softball team, joined by athletes from MACU baseball and women’s basketball donated blood to offset the cost of the transfusion.

“I am so proud of my team,” Lewis said.  “We had a chance to make a significant difference in one family’s life, and we took it.  I feel like a proud parent.  Everyone who donated today did so voluntarily.  We had some baseball players and some women basketball players come with us to donate.  We even had some parents and their friends help donate.  It was special to see everyone come together for a great cause.”

Grimes received two units of blood on November 23rd , but she may need more.  After the transfusion, the doctor prescribed an IV of iron injections for three weeks - each injection takes about an hour. While recovering, she is at home in Lonoke, Arkansas.

“It is the best feeling in the world to know I have a team not only on the field, but also off the field,” Grimes said.  “It's like having a family away from home.  It not only means a lot to me, but it means more to my family than anyone will ever understand.  It's hard for my parents to send me off to school six hours away knowing I am ill. Knowing I am in the hands of Coach Lewis and God it makes it much easier.  If there was any way I could repay them for what they have done for me, I would in a heart beat. I love my teammates.”

Grimes plans to return to campus in January for the spring semester and softball season.
