MONTGOMERY, Ala. - As the end of the school year was drawing near, a lot of students had their thoughts on final exams and what they would be doing over the summer. Those thoughts were also in the minds of the Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team, but they spent a day during the final few days of school at the Angels for the Elderly Assisted Living Homes planting flowers and tomato plants and visiting with the residents of the facility as they have done for the past 14 years.
Judy Gray is the Director of Activities for the facility and has seen the happiness the women’s basketball team has brought to the facility.
“During these hard times, there are those who make life better for others,” Gray said. “The AUM girl’s basketball team has been volunteering their time at Angels for years. They are young women strong in body, mind and spirit.”
The partnership between Angels and the Lady Senators goes all the way back to 1996 under current head coach, now AUM athletic director Steve Crotz. It is a partnership that current coach Dan Davis and his assistant coach Laketa Barwick have continued.
“The girls really enjoy the relationship we have with the Angels facility,” Barwick said. “It is wonderful to see the residents faces light up when we enter the building. Each time we visit the residents express how much they enjoy our visits and ask that we come back soon. With each visit we hope to brighten up their day, but so often they have no idea how much they brighten ours.”
The visits take place on Friday mornings during the school year. The team rotates around five girls each Friday to visit the facility. The girls then interact with the residents through various games and activities and in conversation.
“We really enjoy the partnership we have with the Angels,” head coach Dan Davis said. “It has been a great on-going partnership since former coach Steve Crotz started it. The girls look forward to the various things we do with the residents and it is very important that we expose our players to ways to give back to the Montgomery community and more importantly they see the importance of giving back for the rest of their lives.”
