This summer Holy Names (Calif.) University hosted youth basketball camps for boys and girls in the Oakland area. As Holy Names moves toward becoming a NAIA Champions of Character institution, the character values were hot topic at all camp settings. The five core values of the program are: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership. In each of the camps these five core values were discussed. Each day campers and counselors alike focused on one of the core values and demonstrated how they translate that trait on and off the basketball court.
Holy Names coaches and student-athletes helped campers understand the importance of each core value.
Integrity: Positive internal traits that guide the individual
Respect: Treating others the way you want to be treated
Responsibility: The social force that binds the individual to the good of the team
Sportsmanship: Following the rules, spirit and etiquette of athletic competition
Servant Leadership: Serving the greater good while focusing on the team’s mission and purpose
Coach Dennis Jones and Coach Steve Spencer, respectively the head men’s and women’s basketball coaches, developed a fundamentals based camp curriculum in the summer of 1997. Both coaches thought it would be a great idea to incorporate a skill set approach to the game along with character education. Twelve years later the Hawks have ushered in over 500 children between the ages of 7 and 13 to learn the game of basketball.
