Olathe, Kan. – College of the Southwest will host a Spring 2006 Champions of Character Community Summit on Tuesday, February 7th, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Lea County Event Center in Hobbs, New Mexico. NAIA Special Presenter Bruce Brown and NAIA Director of Champions of Character Initiatives Rob Miller will be featured speakers at the event. Both Brown and Miller travel the country sharing the Champions of Character message and challenging adults and youth to think about the importance of ethical behavior and character development not just in sport, but in every aspect of life.

The community summit will focus on the five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. These values help young people, and those associated with their development, make good choices in all aspects of life and reflect the true spirit of competition. Community summit participants will include student-athletes, coaches and parents from local high schools and colleges and representatives from youth organizations like the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club. Admission is free however seating is limited. Reserved seating may be obtained by contacting Janine Teague at jteague@csw.edu or by calling 505-392-6565 extension 1092.

College of the Southwest serves as a Champions of Character Program Center and the summit is just one aspect of community outreach created to help change the culture of sport. Shawn Fouts, Dean of Students and Program Center Director at College of the Southwest, coordinates character education through conferences and joins the Champions of Character program with the College’s Jack Maddox Distinguished Lecture Series, which features nationally recognized presenters who address the area community on relevant issues of interest.

In addition, College of the Southwest will make itself available to regional school districts and youth athletic programs to promote and share the valuable message of character ethics with coaches, players and parents in the New Mexico area. Champions of Character has been one of the best programs we have used to not only promote a healthier culture of sports, but to promote our college as well. We have been invited to high schools, Boys & Girls Clubs and AAU events to speak about Champions of Character and undoubtedly questions arise as to our college and the academic and athletic programs we offer. It has been so successful that our Admissions and Advancement Departments have teamed with Athletics to provide funding for the programming of events.”

    - Shawn Fouts, Dean of Students at College of the Southwest

Champions of Character is an outstanding program by which our student-athletes, our parents and our institution gain awareness about the worth of sportsmanship and exhibiting healthy school spirit.”

    - Robert McClain, Channing High School Principal

Champions of Character is an excellent program to get parents and coaches attention about their behavior at youth sporting events. We used it for the first time this year and it has made a difference in the attitudes exhibited by parents, especially.”

    - Mike Clampitt, Chief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Club of Hobbs, NM
