OLATHE, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Champions of Character founding partner Buffalo Funds present Buffalo Funds Five Star Awards for each of the NAIA’s 23 championship sports. The Jamestown College (N.D.) wrestling program was recently awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for its dedication and implementation of the Champions of Character program’s five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The Jimmies, who compete in the Dakota Athletic Conference, are led by head coach Jason McCloud.
”In 2007, the team came together on and off the mat. We preach brotherhood and being a family on our team,” said McCloud. “You may beat each during practice but at the end of the day you need to help each other up.”
During the season there are many ups and downs. The Jamestown wrestling program is committed and does not dwell on the negatives rather looks for the positives and opportunities to improve. The Jimmie wrestlers finished 22nd with 13.5 points at the 2007 NAIA National Tournament.
”You cannot have a tight knit team when everyone is out for themselves,” said sophomore Nate Peine. “Character is what our team is about. When things go wrong or when a teammate has a problem, each wrestler knows that he can trust a teammate to help them out.”
McCloud, Peine and the Jamestown wrestling program are part of the community that is dedicated to intentionally teaching character in and out of sport. To learn more visit www.jc.edu.
