OLATHE, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Champions of Character founding partner Buffalo Funds present Buffalo Funds Five Star Awards for each of the NAIA’s 23 championship sports. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) men’s basketball program was recently awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for its dedication and implementation of the Champions of Character program’s five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The Cougars, who compete in the American Mideast Conference, are led by head coach Scott Flemming.
”We want character to be who we are and not just how we act. Our character is deeply rooted in our Christian faith. In the heat of an emotional game, we want our actions to reveal good character,” said Flemming. “It is important that we keep each other accountable. This makes us a stronger team. By embracing the five core character values we are able to reach our full potential as coaches and student-athletes.”
The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball program not only plays to win but wants to do so in the right way. It is important to the players and coaches to represent the institution in a positive way and to demonstrate the Christian faith.
”As players, we have to realize that we represent more than just ourselves when we take the court. We represent our school and Christ. By living this out on the court, every time we practice and play, we can make a positive impact on our opponents and fans,” said senior center Steve Mayes. “You are able to focus on playing your best because you do not get caught up in things that distract from playing good basketball. We have been able to earn the respect of our opponents regardless of the final score.”
Flemming, Mayes and the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars are part of the community that is dedicated to intentionally teaching character in and out of sport. To learn more visit www.mvnu.edu.
